Thanks to Spyder, the Temptress once again had live accordion music at Raft up (The Octopus and the Squid). The Temptress' sea witch did manage to acquire new crew for the sail back to shore. Real sailors don't need motors, anyways! There was also a neccessary repair to the mainsail that had to be done last minute. Cap'n, the clever fellow, MacGyver'ed it up real nice and the race was under way!
Weather: Sunny, nice, windy, perfect
Race: Two laps, four marks. Dave worked Bow, Cap'n skippered and mainsail trimmed, Raven and Denise and Jocelyn worked lines, Raven occasionally mainsail trimmed, Alex cranked the winchhandle, and Katie helped get beer learned terminology and also pulled some lines. Katie picked up sailing terms quickly. Wind was heavy and the Temptress was on a nice 15% angle when Maria screemed with glee from above the cabin at the joyful sail we were on!

There were some other events this day that were not pleasant and will not be reflected in the ship's log online. However, the Quartermaster and the Crew of the Temptress will not forget who is responsible for the mishaps at sea! Let's just say that we all agree it's not a good idea to take a 40' sailboat out in the madness that is duck dodge without a firm understanding of the rules of the road and how to maneuver a mark. We also note that when two rules are in conflict with eachother, it's best to go with the tactic that doesn't kill the guy in the dingy between us and the mark.

Raft up: Well, the temptress dropped off Jocelyn, Maria, Alex and Denise at the dock before heading to the raft up. Raven took Katie to kiss the mast or master of the boats, as is her duty as a Duck Dodge virgin. They ran into Dave on the Dreamscape and gave him their clothes so they could swim back to the temptress! All in all, a wonderful day!

Duck Dodge 2009

Official Disclaimer and Apology

It is true that the Temptress has been sailing every week since May 12th, and yet the good-fer-nothing Quartermaster has failed to post in the Logbook at all this year. This was about SAILING dammit! The Temptressed sailed along smoothly and as we passed the finish line, the committee blew the horn. The crew was confused for we thought the route required two laps. "Did we just finish?" "Wait, did we just WIN?" We had to go to the committee boat to clear up the confusion.
And, yes, we WON.

Jan. 18, 2009- Goosebumps!

Jan. 18, 2009 Ship's Log.

Weather: sunny, relatively warm, low winds.

Crew: Cap'n Tom, Davy, Niall, Justin, Maria, Denise, Raven and Dylan.

With the wind as calm as it was, all the ships lingered close to the start line. First, that the Temptress did leave with her crew at about 6:30 pm. And, second, that the crew all made it safely back to land by 10:30 pm. Clearly, the same could not be said for the beer, nor the rum.

The logbook will also reflect that there were no mistakes made on the Temptress that evening, especially by her incredibly talented bow-woman, and that, as usual, the Temptress won the race. Captain yet again maneuvered the course brilliantly, and John kept the live sails trimmed...and also contributed greatly to ensuring that ALL the crew made it back to land safely.

Raft Up:
The Temptress approached the raft up daftly, with live music, and many a stompin' foot and raised voice! As she headed north, three wenches sat on the foredeck splicing the mainbrace, as it were, when one addlepate let her weapon fall overboard! It'll be the cat o' nine tails for her!
Cap'n ordered the Temptress to turn back for the weapon, as he rightly should. As the Temptress approached the sword, Pirate Raven and Pirate Burgess were over the larboard side reaching.... it slipped through Raven's fingers, and Pirate Burgess, the saucy Irish wench, went overboard for the sword! She were barely hanging on the ship what with one leg wrapped around a life line, her head plunged deep into the black water.... and next, sure as the sun sets, the wind was doing the devil's bidding because it blew up Pirate Burgess's skirt and that be a sight to see! True we would have been first if we hadn't had to rescue a weapon that fell overboard....punishments are due to that scurvy swab who loses sight o' her weapon!

After the race, wenches on deck shouting a chanty:
Yo-ho-yo-ho a Pirates life for me!
We pillage, we plunder, we Rifle, we loot!
Drink up me hearties yo-ho!
We kidnap and scavage and don't give a hoot!
Drink up me hearties yo-ho!
Yo- ho- yo- ho a pirates life for me!

Raft up: "The Lure o' the Rum"
We, by then we were pretty drunk so there's not much the log can reflect but a few choppy notes. And there be some vague memory of almost not making it back to the Temptress as she drifted away. There were saucy wenches dancing to a fine beat on something that looked like a boat but was missing a mast...The raft up was covered with lots of scurvy pirates and so much caution was needed to keep one's booty safe. There be some time spent on Twisted Journey that the Quartermaster only remembers because she has a photo of it and a card stuffed down her bra the next morning....and finally there be a vague memory of a shot of rum that tasted like butterscotch on the dreamscape.

June 3, 2008 Ships Log

June 3, 2008 Ship's Log- No theme Tonight, but Poseidon declared it "Monsoon Night"

weather- monsoon type drenching rains, 47 degrees temperature, even cooler in the wind of 10 knots gusting to 15 (cap'n's account)
race- starts at 7:10, ends at 7:50
Crew- Cap'n Tom, Davy, Jocelyn, Mac, Raven and John "The Jolly Green Giant"
Inventory- 22 beers, half bottle of wine, flask of rum, 1 bottle of vitamin water

Notes:
The weather situation cannot be ignored. It would seem that Jocelyn is officially on the account at the temptress, as she took the foredeck with soaked shoes. Cap'n's raincoat clearly did not keep out the rain, since before the race even started, his shirt was soaking wet.
The race went underway with no problems, save the fact that we may have crossed the start line just a few seconds too early. Rum was shared to keep the crew warm. Davy noted early in the race: "maybe we should have used a bigger sail."
Turning the mark, cap'n ordered the crew to hoist the spinnaker. The Jolly Green Giant ran from port to starboard and back again to adjust, and readjust the spinnaker pole. Luckily, today there were no "accidents" with the pole. Unfortunately though, the wind turned and the Temptress was flying a spinnaker on a beam reach. The crew worked diligently to get the soaking wet spinnaker back down (Davy commented that there wasn't much point keeping the spinnaker out of the water, but he did a good job of it nonetheless). With the jib up again, the temptress sailed along sweetly. There was some conflict as Davy second-guessed the cap'n, the punishment for which was to immediately bring the cap'n a beer. It all worked out fine, anyways, as Davy was about to grab beer regardless.
Post-race, the Temptress reached nice speeds- "5 Knots!" Shouted the Cap'n. As the wind caught her sails, the Temptress leaned into it like a speeding motorcycle around a sharp curve.... some crew shouted with glee, as others went to the shrouds to put their weight over the life lines. "Was that about ten degree's heel cap'n?" The official (cap'n's) number was 35 degrees- a lovely sail.
While crew compared the lack of color in their fingers, the Cap'n said "I am thinking about skippin' the raft up" To which the Jolly Green Giant replied "You think?!?"

All made it home safely today, if a bit wet.

May 27, 2008 Ships Log

May 27, 2008, "Festivus" Ship's Log

Weather- sunny, 69 degrees, wind at 10 knots (cap'n's account), music-Queen
6:30 Inventory- 20 beers, 1 bottle smoking loon merlot, 1 flask of rum, 1 bottle white wine
Crew- Cap'n, Junie, Mac, Raven, John, Davy, Maria and Peter

Notes:
The Temptress is looking beautiful for festivus. The First Mate acquired a lovely collection of red ribbons and bells to decorate her mighty beautiful. Race starts at 7:10, finishes at 8:12

At 8:03, Cap'n delcared "we've passed a lot of 'em!"
The crew pulled off a successful spinnaker riggin' at aurora. John attempted to injure the Quartermaster by dropping the spinnaker pole on her head, but her reflexes were too quick even with all the rum.

Post race, cap'n left the Bosun John at the help as Cap'n took the foredeck. The crew agreed the cap'n wasn't drunk enough to be on foredeck so some beer was promptly delivered to him.
8:22 inventory- 13 beers, half bottle of white wine, 1 bottle of red wine, 0 rum.

Raft Up- Quatermaster, who is in charge of the ships log, was then lost to the sea....at least until the next morning when she arrived at the temptress to reacquire her shoes, and to clean up all the soggy chips all over the floor. Looks as if the Cap'n and Crew had a mighty wonderful time!

May 20, 2008 Ships Log

Weather- 52 degrees (cap'n's account); cloudy w/occasional sun; windy (10-15 knots, cap'n's account)
Race- started at 7:15, ended at 7:45- one time around- A wonderful Success!
Crew- Cap'n Tom, First Mate Sara, Davy, Junie, Jocelyn, Raven
Drink inventory at 7:00- 18 beers, 1 bottle of Bush Mills Original Irish Whiskey
Drink Inventory at 7:45- 11 beers, less whiskey
Drink Inventory at 10:00- no whiskey....due to the whiskey problem, Raven failed to take inventory of the beer.

Notes: The night started with Davy forgetting to untie the boat from the dock as Cap'n backed her out, almost leading to a collision (Davy disagrees on these facts, but the log will reflect that the Cap'n is NEVER wrong). First mate Sara screamed "I didn't know i could still run across a boat so fast!" as she sped to the port bow to prevent the Temptress from leaving her mark, as it were, on a nearby boat.

Jocelyn and Raven shared duties as bowman (and we recognize, of course, that "bowman" is really just short for "bow-woman").

The start of the race was quite the cluster %#!@. After untangling ourselves from the commite boat's anchor line we were able to dodge the remaining boats and not cross the finish line in last place.

One near-collision happened after the race when Raven had abandoned her position as bowman (for more whiskey of course)- Jocelyn, the ever upstanding sailor went to the fore deck to take up post again just as a ship, hidden behind our sail, was just about to smash into the Temptress. Cap'n performed an amazing 360 at the last minute, practically throwing Jocelyn overboard! But her sea legs proved strong, and she survived with her beer intact.

Junie, another good sailor, worked the lines for tacks and jibes, and also did some winching (or is it wenching?).

Cap'n's comments on the race: "maybe we could've used a smaller sail"

Raft up: Raven and the whiskey disappeared on the Dreamscape, and only one ever returned to the Temptress. All but the whiskey made it back to the dock at 10:30. Those who survived agreed rum was needed for future races.
