Duck Dodge 2009- Part II

June 2

Crew: Cap'n Tom, First Mate Sara, Dave, Denise and Raven.
Weather: Sunny, Beautiful, Perfect
Notes: Pre-Race Cap'n was up the mast doing some serious repairs![need more pictures from Sara and Denise- without photographic documentation, unfortunately, the Quartermaster forgets the details! Arrrrrrrrr!]

June 9- PIRATE NIGHT!!!!
Crew: Cap'n Tom, Dave, Denise, Raven, Spyder, Cailin and this crazy, blood thirsty pirate:
Weather: Sunny, warm, wonderful!
Notes: Temptress is still docking under sail, the crew is impressed with Cap'n and Dave's skills in this department. Thanks to Spyder, the Temptress once again had live accordion music at Raft up (The Octopus and the Squid). The Temptress' sea witch did manage to acquire new crew for the sail back to shore. Another wonderful Pirate Night!!!

June 16
Unfortunately for everyone, Quartermaster missed this race, and therefore is failing to report on it.

June 23, "Economic Recovery Night"

By all accounts the temptress was there, sailed a wonderful race, went to raft up and made it home safely. Crew: Cap'n Tom, Dave, Denise, Maria, Raven, Some French Girl who sang Manu Chao, Alex (French guy)
Quartermaster promises to take better notes and more high quality pictures!

June 30-- ("Pride"??)

Crew: Cap'n Tom, Dave, Denise, Raven, Katie, Maria, Alex, Jocelyn
Notes: We left dock under sail, noticably the Temptress had no motor on her. Real sailors don't need motors, anyways! There was also a neccessary repair to the mainsail that had to be done last minute. Cap'n, the clever fellow, MacGyver'ed it up real nice and the race was under way!
Weather: Sunny, nice, windy, perfect
Race: Two laps, four marks. Dave worked Bow, Cap'n skippered and mainsail trimmed, Raven and Denise and Jocelyn worked lines, Raven occasionally mainsail trimmed, Alex cranked the winchhandle, and Katie helped get beer learned terminology and also pulled some lines. Katie picked up sailing terms quickly. Wind was heavy and the Temptress was on a nice 15% angle when Maria screemed with glee from above the cabin at the joyful sail we were on!

There were some other events this day that were not pleasant and will not be reflected in the ship's log online. However, the Quartermaster and the Crew of the Temptress will not forget who is responsible for the mishaps at sea! Let's just say that we all agree it's not a good idea to take a 40' sailboat out in the madness that is duck dodge without a firm understanding of the rules of the road and how to maneuver a mark. We also note that when two rules are in conflict with eachother, it's best to go with the tactic that doesn't kill the guy in the dingy between us and the mark.

Raft up: Well, the temptress dropped off Jocelyn, Maria, Alex and Denise at the dock before heading to the raft up. Raven took Katie to kiss the mast or master of the boats, as is her duty as a Duck Dodge virgin. They ran into Dave on the Dreamscape and gave him their clothes so they could swim back to the temptress! All in all, a wonderful day!

Duck Dodge 2009

Official Disclaimer and Apology

It is true that the Temptress has been sailing every week since May 12th, and yet the good-fer-nothing Quartermaster has failed to post in the Logbook at all this year. In order to correct this egregious error, the Quartermaster would like to accept numerous floggings, spankings, and dunkings in order to appease the Crew's fury. In the meantime, read this little update on the big events of the summer so far.

May 12th "Committee Appreciation Night"
The Temptress naturally won the race today.

May 19th

Crew: Cap'n Tom, Dave, Raven.
Weather: Crappy and Cold-- look at the crew's rain gear!
The Temptress has no functioning motor today, so we must leave and dock under sail. The most notable thing about this day was the decision to not raft up because the weather was not raft up type weather, and the disturbing lack of beer drinking!

May 26-"Prom Night"
Crew: Cap'n Tom, Dave, Raven
Notes: None of us dressed up for prom. This was about SAILING dammit! The Temptressed sailed along smoothly and as we passed the finish line, the committee blew the horn. The crew was confused for we thought the route required two laps. "Did we just finish?" "Wait, did we just WIN?" We had to go to the committee boat to clear up the confusion.
And, yes, we WON.

Jan. 18, 2009- Goosebumps!

Jan. 18, 2009 Ship's Log.

Weather: sunny, relatively warm, low winds.

Crew: Cap'n Tom, Davy, Niall, Justin, Maria, Denise, Raven and Dylan.

With the wind as calm as it was, all the ships lingered close to the start line. The committee boat decided last-minute to change the course, in light of the circumstances, to go to the highway, the cove and back to the finish line- one lap.

With the race underway, the crew had a lovely time. Another comradery beer was thrown to the temptress from the Skipper of the Mirabai, this time Cap'n Tom caught the beer without incident.

Naturally, the Temptress crossed the finish line well ahead of the Mirabai.

After the race, the crew of the Temptress agreed (in typical pirate fashion) to sail around the lake and enjoy the weather, after the race.

Jan 12, 2009- Goosebumps!

January 12th, 2009 Ship's Log.

The weather was cloudy, but a decent wind.
Crew: Cap'n Tom, Davy, Niall, Raven

The only remarkable event during this race was that Cap'n failed to catch a flying beer, and, in recognition of this, performed a 360.

The not-so-remarkable events of this race include finishing the race...well ahead of the Mirabai.

July 30, 2008- Post Apocalyptic Steampunk Prom Night

Well, as it happens, a crew of airship pirates had lost their vessel in the middle of the sea and, being that they were good looking, musically talented, and all around loads of fun, they were brought aboard the Temptress to look for said vessel and to contribute their aeronautical skills in our quest to win the race. Huzzah!

Crew: Cap'n Tom, Davey, John, Raven Von Ember, Herr Spyder, Lady Katrina, Dr. Henri, and Monsieur Cyrus.

Weather: Cloudy, cool, very windy (the decks did not stay dry!)

Inventory: More beer than could reasonably fit in the icebox, 1.5 bottles of rum, 1 Accordion.

Due to a complete lack of a functioning timepeice, the log book will reflect only two time-specific facts. First, that the Temptress did leave with her crew at about 6:30 pm. And, second, that the crew all made it safely back to land by 10:30 pm. Clearly, the same could not be said for the beer, nor the rum.

The logbook will also reflect that there were no mistakes made on the Temptress that evening, especially by her incredibly talented bow-woman, and that, as usual, the Temptress won the race. (Many thanks to Davey for taking over at the bow!) Captain yet again maneuvered the course brilliantly, and John kept the live sails trimmed...and also contributed greatly to ensuring that ALL the crew made it back to land safely.

Raft Up:
The Temptress approached the raft up daftly, with live music, and many a stompin' foot and raised voice! Heave! Ho! Heave! Ho!

Many thanks to our aeronauts, and to the lovely crew of the Temptress for yet another successful duck dodge!

June 10, 2008 Ship's Log "Pirate Night"

Prior to leaving port, a few foreboding signs: First, a serious terror, the spinnaker was torn about 8 feet.... Second, a worse terror, the sultry Irish Pirate Queen "Knife in the Water" came driftin' in on the sou'westerlies and boarded our vessel. Both signs bode ill for the Temptress, and what bodes ill for the Temptress bodes ill for us all!

Weather: Sunny, with a few clouds, wind 10 knots, 58 degrees

Crew: Jenny "Knife in the Water" Burgess, Cap'n Tom, Maria, Andrea, Dread Pirate Red (First Mate), Scott, Davey, Pirate Jocelyn "the One-Eyed Threat", Pirate Raven Ember

Inventory: 2 bottles o'rum, 48 beers, 1 bottle Vitamin Water, half bottle of white wine

Notes:
Sails up at 6:52, the wenches went below deck to put on proper pirate dress (except Jenny, who felt less was better than more when it comes to dress). We were first to cross the start line, and the Temptress kept her steady pace in first place passin' all the scurvy dogs what want to call themselves Pirates on their little Jolly-boats! As she headed north, three wenches sat on the foredeck splicing the mainbrace, as it were, when one addlepate let her weapon fall overboard! It'll be the cat o' nine tails for her!
Cap'n ordered the Temptress to turn back for the weapon, as he rightly should. As the Temptress approached the sword, Pirate Raven and Pirate Burgess were over the larboard side reaching.... it slipped through Raven's fingers, and Pirate Burgess, the saucy Irish wench, went overboard for the sword! She were barely hanging on the ship what with one leg wrapped around a life line, her head plunged deep into the black water.... and next, sure as the sun sets, the wind was doing the devil's bidding because it blew up Pirate Burgess's skirt and that be a sight to see! Davey and Raven ran to pull Pirate Burgess's face out o' the water, and she screamed "THE SWORD FIRST! SAVE THE SWORD FIRST!"

Aye....no landlubber is she! She be a real pirate!

There be lots of harassment and threats o' boarding the rest o' the race, but all the cowardly dogs high tailed it away from the Temptress when they heard the threats:

"Give us ya RUM and ya WOMEN, or it'll be Kissing the Gunner's Daughter For You!"
"We'll Keelhaul any Bilge-sucking Blaggard that fails to have Rum aboard his vessel when we board!"
"you'll be dancing with Jack Ketch you poxy Tar!"
"You Cowardly Dooooooog! You addlepate!"

The Temptress finished the race at 7:45 in fourth place. True we would have been first if we hadn't had to rescue a weapon that fell overboard....punishments are due to that scurvy swab who loses sight o' her weapon!

After the race, wenches on deck shouting a chanty:
Yo-ho-yo-ho a Pirates life for me!
We pillage, we plunder, we Rifle, we loot!
Drink up me hearties yo-ho!
We kidnap and scavage and don't give a hoot!
Drink up me hearties yo-ho!
Yo- ho- yo- ho a pirates life for me!

Raft up: "The Lure o' the Rum"
We, by then we were pretty drunk so there's not much the log can reflect but a few choppy notes. There were being a lot o' kissin' wenches, lots o' shots o' rum. And there be some vague memory of almost not making it back to the Temptress as she drifted away. There were saucy wenches dancing to a fine beat on something that looked like a boat but was missing a mast...The raft up was covered with lots of scurvy pirates and so much caution was needed to keep one's booty safe. There be some time spent on Twisted Journey that the Quartermaster only remembers because she has a photo of it and a card stuffed down her bra the next morning....and finally there be a vague memory of a shot of rum that tasted like butterscotch on the dreamscape.

June 3, 2008 Ships Log

June 3, 2008 Ship's Log- No theme Tonight, but Poseidon declared it "Monsoon Night"

weather- monsoon type drenching rains, 47 degrees temperature, even cooler in the wind of 10 knots gusting to 15 (cap'n's account)
race- starts at 7:10, ends at 7:50
Crew- Cap'n Tom, Davy, Jocelyn, Mac, Raven and John "The Jolly Green Giant"
Inventory- 22 beers, half bottle of wine, flask of rum, 1 bottle of vitamin water

Notes:
The weather situation cannot be ignored. It would seem that Jocelyn is officially on the account at the temptress, as she took the foredeck with soaked shoes. Cap'n's raincoat clearly did not keep out the rain, since before the race even started, his shirt was soaking wet.
The race went underway with no problems, save the fact that we may have crossed the start line just a few seconds too early. Rum was shared to keep the crew warm. Davy noted early in the race: "maybe we should have used a bigger sail."
Turning the mark, cap'n ordered the crew to hoist the spinnaker. The Jolly Green Giant ran from port to starboard and back again to adjust, and readjust the spinnaker pole. Luckily, today there were no "accidents" with the pole. Unfortunately though, the wind turned and the Temptress was flying a spinnaker on a beam reach. The crew worked diligently to get the soaking wet spinnaker back down (Davy commented that there wasn't much point keeping the spinnaker out of the water, but he did a good job of it nonetheless). With the jib up again, the temptress sailed along sweetly. There was some conflict as Davy second-guessed the cap'n, the punishment for which was to immediately bring the cap'n a beer. It all worked out fine, anyways, as Davy was about to grab beer regardless.
Post-race, the Temptress reached nice speeds- "5 Knots!" Shouted the Cap'n. As the wind caught her sails, the Temptress leaned into it like a speeding motorcycle around a sharp curve.... some crew shouted with glee, as others went to the shrouds to put their weight over the life lines. "Was that about ten degree's heel cap'n?" The official (cap'n's) number was 35 degrees- a lovely sail.
While crew compared the lack of color in their fingers, the Cap'n said "I am thinking about skippin' the raft up" To which the Jolly Green Giant replied "You think?!?"

All made it home safely today, if a bit wet.
